Boise (One)

Crazy stuff, Man.
Experimental film comes in all different shapes and sizes, but I don't think I've ever watched something like this. It takes about five minutes to get your brain into the "right headspace" for this flick, but once you do, it's pretty dang cool.

Jazz Singer (1959)

Attention Music Lovers
If you love music and especially old standards, then you will love this movie. Danny Thomas gives a fine performance and had a voice that I think few people even knew about, let alone recognized him for. Peggy Lee also out does herself in her role as a Broadway artist and recording star. This lady always could lay out a song with emotion and style. These two performers put on a real class act!

Excellent Danny Thomas & Peggy Lee Movie
This is an excellent movie with great singing and acting. Had seen years ago and kept looking for it to come out on DVD. This is a movie that is well worth watching. Danny Thomas was a gifted singer, actor and humanitarian. If you like his movies, this is well worth having.

This is a really great movie. This movie is worth watching.
From great acting to suburb cast this movie has it all. After seeing all three versions, this is the best. After coming from the Army, Jerry (Danny Thomas) sees his family again. After a short visit, he goes onto success in his music carrer as a "Jazz Singer." After many trials and fights, he is reunited with his family, and finds happiness.

The Battle of Shaker Heights

The Battle of Shaker Heights - For Lovers of Independent Film Making and Acting
The Battle of Shaker Heights

I have never watched Project Greenlight. There I said it. I happened upon this movie and I'm glad I did. To me it's only of minor importance how this movie was funded and made, because the end product matters most. And the end product is much better than many would lead you to believe. You just have to know what kind of movie watcher you are. If you love independent films and don't mind slow and nuanced acting and a story with no cheap thrills, you can enjoy this. If you like more traditional movie experiences, you might find this treatment a bit slow.

Shia LaBoeuf shows why he is the "next big thing" of his generation in a very subtle and impressive portrayal of the main character. As Kelly he's an extremely over-intelligent high school kid who channels his brain power into nerdy pursuits like World War II history and military memorablia. Elden Henson is...

If you watched Project Greenlight, this is great
Under normal circumstances, one would not think much of this movie. It's a nice coming-of-age story about a 17-year-old boy (wonderfully played by Shia LaBeouf), but there's nothing spectacular about it. His relationships with his parents and his potential love interests are not fully developed, and the viewer doesn't necessarily buy into what they try to tell us. It's been done before, and it's been done better.

But, if you watched the Project Greenlight series on HBO, it's a must-see. It's fun to see how all the scenes turned out. The much-debated group hug no longer exists--if it did, you'd walk out of the theater or turn of the TV. A big thank you to producer Chris Moore for getting rid of that.

All in all, it's a "Sunday Afternoon Movie". It's the kind of movie you watch on a Sunday afternoon when it's raining outside and all you want to do is sit on the recliner and eat popcorn while someone tells you a story for an hour or so.

A very well-done coming of age flick
Shia Lebeouf plays Kelly Ernswiler, a high school senior trying to just survive life in this comedy-drama by directors Efram Potelle and Kyle Rankin in what is arguably there biggest job yet.

Kelly is a young man who enjoys reinacting famous battles from past wars. This is partly a way of reliving history, and a partly a way of escaping life with his recovering drug addict father, played by William Sadler of The Green Mile, and his mother, played by Kathleen Quinlen from Apollo 13. Kelly still hasn't found a way to forgive his father for his past abuses, so he prefers to spend the day with his new friend Bart Rowland and his wealthy family. Bart and Kelly strike up a friendship over their shared love of history and Kelly's desire to strike back at a school bully. Along the way, Kelly finds himself attracted to Bart's older sister, Tabby, a girl engaged to another man, which threatens to destroy their friendship.

This is a very rich coming-of-age story with characters you...

Fish Meat: Choose Your Farm Wisely

Fish-farming : the good, the bad and the ugly.
Fishfarming is supposed to provide humanity with an ever-enlarging supply of healthy and abundant food! The different types of of farms presented in this film use different farming philosophies with varying impact on nature depending on the species being farmed. Not all farming is good or even tastes good. The film goes thus goes to multiple parts of the world to show results achieved by very different farming approaches.

Finally guidance on which fish to eat!
It is about time that someone made a movie about the fish we eat. With all of the confusing information in the media about which fish are "bad" and which fish are "good", Ted Caplow helps clarify the issue. Are farmed fish bad or good? This documentary gives an unbiased view and even some SOLUTIONS at the end of the movie, which a lot of documentaries don't do. Bravo!

Dissapointing
After working in the fish industry for 15 years, I knew a bit more than the average viewer; however, this doc was nonetheless dissapointing. I feel that it could have been longer, provided much more information, and offered more solutions and examples of ways to solve the seafood crisis. I'm sure a lot of hard work was put into producing this film but I'm afraid it falls short.

Severe Clear

Film makes war Severe Clear
In my opinion this film should be viewed by all who have never been to war - especially the politicians who place our men and women in the armed services in harm's way. Whatever the motivation may be for getting our soldiers involved in any war, the impact it has on them is not fully comprehended by those who have not been there. Captain Mike Scotti has provided a realistic picture of the horrors of war and its aftereffect on those who have been there and returned alive and broken. I would also recommend reading his book, The Blue Cascade, which details his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both the book and the movie brought tears to my eyes, as I remembered the little boy Mike was, when I taught him in fourth grade many years ago. Pat Gatti

Good American Boys Doing a Dirty Job
This documentary puts you in the shoes of a group of U.S. Marines who went into Iraq in February 2003 with the initial assault to topple Saddam Hussein and his regime. They are fully committed to their cause and put themselves in harm's way for each other and for the Corps. After seeing this film, it is clear how we need to engage in wars only as a last resort and never take these young warriors for granted. Let's be 100% sure about the need to go next time; shall we? There is significant profanity but in the context you feel they are entitled to say what they want and a lot more. These boys have earned it. These guys are tough and precious at the same time - MARINES to the CORE (CORPS).

Connects with Marine
The movie provides a glimpse of the early stages of the second Iraq war through one Marine's eyes, putting us in touch with his emotions and, to the extent possible with a single camera in real-time, some of his experience in battle. The movie will renew your respect and appreciation for these Marines and out other troopers. More than that, I hope people who watch this movie and movies like it will translate their emotions into doing something to help our troopers when they return from battle. Talking to politicians to get them to push the VA and other agencies to do a better job, getting involved in private organizations that help our vets, reaching out to the vet down the street -- whatever it is, we need to do much, much better. Get involved.

Earth Girls Are Easy

California Crayola
This movie is crayon colorful in its outlook and its sophistication. Stars Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum are joined by relative unknowns Jim Carrey and Daymon Wayans in a romp through Southern California. Puns, silliness, sex jokes (it's PG so they're not lewd), satire, and some of Julie Brown's funniest songs are highlights.

Mac (Goldblum) is captain of an alien space ship that crash lands in Valerie's (Davis) pool because of the antics of his sexually deprived side kicks Wiploc (Carrey) and Zeebo (Wayans). The three hairy spacemen cheerfully turn Valerie's life from a disaster to. . . absolute chaos.

Julie Brown (Candy) and Michael McKean (Woody) steal the show with wonderful bits. When Candy wins "this month's Miss August" and sings "I'm a Blonde" listen and rewind to hear it again. It's a hoot! You won't recognize McKeen, from "Laverne and Shirley", "This is Spinal Tap" or, more recently, "A Mighty Wind." He makes a delightful Woody: the pool man with a...

An Entertaining Musical Sci-fi Comedy!
"Earth Girls Are Easy" is a musical sci-fi comedy about valley-girl Valerie (played by Geena Davis) living in 1980's Los Angeles, and who is engaged to a cheating, boyfriend doctor named Ted (played by Charles Rocket). Catching her boyfriend at home playing with a nurse, the disgruntled Valerie gets the surprise of her life when a spaceship crash lands in her swimming pool. The spaceship's crew (played by Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans), haven't had any "shore leave" in a long time. Not wanting to cause too much of a stir, Valerie takes the alien trio to her best friend Candy (played by Julie Brown) who owns a beauty salon. After Candy transforms the furry trio into believable human males, Valerie finds their captain, Mac (Jeff Goldblum), very attractive. Wild things happen when the alien trio are taken to a dance club and letting them drive in California traffic!

The fact that this film is also a musical only adds to the humor as there are...

"I like 'em big...and stupid!"
If you like 'em that way too, then this is the movie for you!

Four very strong leads - Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum and then unknown Jim Carrey and Damon Williams - backed up by Julie Brown deliver a paper-thin story with humor, bright colors and an ineffable sexiness. I think this was an attempt to revive musical-comedy cinema in the late '80s; the previous shining example being "Xanadu". The songs are original, funny and have enjoyed cult status ever since.

This is one of the first movies to show that inter-planetary romances don't have to end with an ova-depositor rammed down your throat.

I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys turing their minds off for an hour and a half of fun.

Don Ricardo Returns

"You live to fight? Come. Your life has begun."
My family jumped at the chance to see the obscure film "Don Ricardo Returns" for two reasons: We love writer Johnston McCulley (who also penned the "Zorro" stories) and we love any movie with a swashbuckling girl. "Don Ricardo Returns" has poor acting, poor production values and sloppy filming, but it's also kinda fun and worth watching once for fans of the genre (the genre is Old-California-Romantic-Adventures-of-Long-Lost-Shanghaied-Heirs-to-the-Rancho-and-Savior-of-the-Peons/Peasants).

Young and drippy Don Ricardo has an evil cousin who pays a ne'er do well to kidnap and kill him, then report his death as a sea drowning (movie buffs will recognize this as a plot thread from Disney's 1961 Epic Loopfest, "Babes in Toyland". We had a hard time not singing "Slowly, slowly he sank into the sea..." as the salty sea captain reported Don Ricardo's death). Ricardo (played by Fred Coby, the VERY poor man's Tyrone Power) has a babe-alicious betrothed, Dorthea, who doesn't believe...

Naked Gun: Trilogy Collection

You will laugh and then laugh some more..
The Naked Gun series is probably one of the funniest movie sagas ever created. And that is quite the statement when you look at all the other series out like for instance Scary Movie.

But Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, Naked Gun 2 1/2 the Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33 1/3 The Final Insult are all gems and full of non stop laughs within.

Leslie Nielsen is a perfect choice as Lt. Frank Dreben, a bumbling police detective who works for a special division of the police force known as "Police Squad". Along for the ride is his partner Nordburg (performed by O.J. Simpson) and the captain Ed (George Kennedy) all provide more then a handful of laughs as they bumble through from location to location in search of the would be criminal. Of course no cop is complete without a woman to fill your every hearts desire and the woman for Frank is Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) who seems to always be mixed in with the wrong crowd in all 3 movies only to learn that...

Don't worry Naked Gun fans!
For those of you who are worried about getting this set because it might not have the special features from the individual Naked Gun discs, don't worry. All three movies in the set have the same commentaries and trailers from the previously released DVDs. So not worth the double-dip for those that have the flicks already, but for the cost conscious new buyer of the Naked Guns, a great value for three great movies and all the special features from before.

Genius
In 1980 Leslie Neilson went from serious respectable roles to the doctor on board a chaos controlled plane, in the first spoof, Flying High. The Naked Gun series is the epitomy of spoof comedy. Even the final credits are hilariously funny. The right blend of serious attitudes to insanely stupid things is what makes this work. "When i see a queerly dressed man stabing someone in full view of 100 people, i shoot the bastard thats my policy!" "That was a park production of Macbeth. You killed 5 actors, good ones." Genius lines such as this fixed the first Naked Gun as a classic. The aptely named Naked Gun 2 1/2 fell right into place. "Whats he doing in the Red Light District?" " Sex Frank?" "Not right now Ed we have work to do" Even better. The third lacked the puch the other 2 had but was still hilarious. But the one defining thing for all naked guns is the credits at the begginning. The top of the police car going all sorts of places. Womens change rooms, Star Wars, the whomb and many...

Rubbadubbers: Finbar The Mighty Movie Star

Very Happy
This is a nice DVD. My child loves Rubbadubbers and is entertained watching this video.

I love the rubberdubbers - 5 year old loved it, 3 year old didn't.
The Rubberdubbers is a hard-to-find British preschool slow action series (kinda like claymation) that is occasionally run on the Discovery channel. Finbar is the arrogant but lovable shark and this DVD centers around him. (I think he is very funny.) My 5 year old son was engaged, but my 3 year old daughter did not like it that much - maybe when she is older. I enjoy watching it though, so I'll be optimistic.

These are good for kids
They can't get enough of these; hours upon hours... great video for older kids even. I'd recommend if you have younger childrend

Through the movie Lee Dae-Geun's meaningful story as regret, longing, and love for his family members runs from first to last with beautiful music.
It is a sad story, but it makes me to consider a real meaning of life and family in this generation. Consequently, it is a philosophical humanism and family movie.
Finally, the director Shim and excellent actor Lee Dae-Gun did nice jobs.

This is great stuff
Michael gives us some in-depth scholarly insight into the spiritual realm. As he covers the four topics in the above title, you find yourself listening to him and asking the questions are these things, these concepts correct or true. If so, you will become enlighten as to other possibilities.

This presentation is for those who are genuinely looking for more insight into these areas. This is highly recommended!

House at the End of the Street

If you are over 30, you have seen this story many times before
There was nothing "wrong" with this movie, but I get the impression most of the people who are giving it 5 stars and saying it was "edge of your seat suspense" and "chilling" are younger viewers.

Anybody over age 30 has probably seen this same story at least half a dozen times by now.

I would have probably given it another star if I had not heard so much praise for the film beforehand.

But the movie did not live up to the hype.

It was pretty much a "by the numbers" horror film that borrows very, very, very heavily from the Grand-daddy of horror films that started this whole Genre --- PSYCHO

No real twists, pretty much what you expect and are waiting for from beginning to end.

So certainly not bad, but not the "masterpiece of suspense that will keep you from sleeping" that so many proclaimed it to be.

Dumb: I've seen better; I've seen worse. Your choice;not mine.
The synopsis sounded interesting. Thus, I rented it. This film was a big disappointment. They should have saved their time, effort and money on this one. That is just my opinion. This film was not as suprising, interesting or scary in any way, except that it could happen in any town at any time. This is not the first time I saw a film with the same premise. A film entitled SleepAway Camp, something like that. In that one, the parents did the same thing as in this one. I don't want to give anything away. The acting performances are believeable, but the film is basically a dud. We had it figured out in the first ten minutes of this film and then just watched it to see if what we guessed was right and we were.
Overall, I can't recommend it, but that is your choice.

There's a house like that in every town. Theatrical release review
It seems like only yesterday that Jennifer Lawrence made her big screen debut in Winters Bone, a small scale but critically acclaimed movie which gained her an Oscar nomination.

Since then she has gone from strength to strength starring in two of the biggest box office successes we have seen in the last two years X Men First Class and Hunger Games. I think it's fair to say that her rise has been meteoric.

As I watched the movie and the camera's love affair with her, the thought went through my mind several times of what an exquisite looking creature she truly is, still young enough to play a teenager.

A grisly murder of two parents takes place in a remote house in a leafy suburb of an upscale neighborhood of a typical rural town. The daughter who killed them was never found thus stoking local legend that she is still running around loose.

Years later a mother played by Elisabeth Shue and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer) move to said town they...

Deserter

Re Released True Life account of the French Foreign Legion that really does not star Tom Hardy.
This is a 2002 film that has been re released to shamelessly cash in on the increasingly deserved success of screen hunk, Tom Hardy (`Warrior' etc). It places his name up front but he is not the star. This is the film of the auto biopgraphy by Simon Murray - `Legionnaire'. Murray is played by Paul Fox, who must be related to a side board his acting is so wooden. His previous acting highs have come in the TV soap `Coronation Street' and the voice of Corff the bartender in video game `Dragon Age II'!

Well the plot goes that he gets rebuffed by a lady and in stiff upper lipped fashion he runs off to join the romance of The French Foreign Legion as his hero is Errol Flynn. His timing is pretty off as this coincides with the Algerian awakening for independence and as France has just been kicked out of Vietnam there are not that many places for him to be sent - so Algeria it is.

First he has to suffer boot camp and it is really not a very nice place at all and is...

Worth looking for
This film was recommended to me so I bought it. At the time I did not have a Reg.2 player so I was extremely disappointed that I couldn't see it. When I was able to see it, I realized why my friends had recommended it. First, it is another Tom Hardy gem, though one of the British Foxes plays the lead and is very, very good.
The plot of the movie is suspenseful. You will never suspect what occurs at the end. The unrequited love angle seems almost an afterthought, tho the movie is based on a real story. It tells of the French Foreign Legion (into which no French men are allowed!) during the Algerian struggle for independence. Simon (the "Deserter") sees both sides of the struggle and wonders why, in a land so large, Arabs and Europeans cannot live together. Like they had done for generations. Poor Simon, he is so naive one thinks he will not make it out of boot camp. But he is befriended by DuPont (Hardy) and learns through him how to be a soldier and survivor. This is a terrifc...

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO CUT YOUR LOSSES
The year is 1960. Simon Murray (Paul Fox) joins the French Foreign Legion because of his romantic notions. It is an iron clad contract for 5 years during which he is sent to Algeria where the Arabs are fighting for Independence. Like "Full Metal Jacket" the film takes you through the rigors of training with cruel and sadistic trainers. The diverse group of trainees bond together. Simon supplies us with some boring first person narration to the background of some melancholy French tune.

Simon makes it through training, and life gets better...almost. He gets a "Dear John" letter and wants to leave. In town he discovers the locals hate the French and want their independence. His romantic notions have placed him on the wrong side, one that he is committed to be a part. His ideas of life become confused and tested in the reality of life and conflict. There are French and Algerians who are on both sides of the independence movement, primarily for economic reasons.

Death Race 3: Inferno (Unrated)

Frankenstein In The Desert
I can't believe it , Roger Corman's 'DEATH RACE' franchise just acts like the energizer bunny , it keeps going and going. Now Paul W.S. Anderson and Director Roel Rene have taken the race to the Kalahari desert in 'DEATH RACE 3: INFERNO' -2013 with virtually the same cast and introducing Dougray Scott and drop dead gorgeously deadly Hlubi Mboya taking care of the villain department. Luke Goss scowls and rants returning as Death Race champ Frankenstein and his sidekick Katrina played by the equally gorgeous Tanit Phoenix kicks butt to win the final race for freedom. The real stars of the film however are behind the scenes as the beautiful editing by Radu Ion and Michael Trent blending with the first rate photography by Wayne Shields elevates the film higher than it should be. The music score by Trevor Morris is just OK but eventually overwhelmed by the incredibly loud explosions and grinding motor engines persisting throughout the films running time (but that's why we watch this...

IT STARTS AND ENDS WITH YOU
Frankenstein (Luke Goss) is up for his final race for his freedom. In a hostile take over Weyland (Ving Rhames) has sold the company which sponsors the races to Niles York (Dougray Scott) an immediately unlikeable person. Niles plans to franchise Death Race around the globe, but to have an audience he needs Frankenstein. Frankenstein is given the ultimatum by Niles: Lose or Die.

The race takes place in South Africa through friendly and unfriendly shanty towns as well as desert. Frankenstein races against people who would rather see him dead than win the race. Names like: Razor, Nero, Joker, Pretty Boy, Olga, and Psycho. Prior to the race the female navigators are placed in a caged death match as 16 Xena looking/dressed women fight each other until 10 are left.

There is a quick flashback to explain Frankenstein, but it is short. The film has plenty of inane "explode on contact" action, racing, hot babes and a twist. Break out the popcorn.

Passionada

A flawed, but appealing, romantic comedy
(Note: this review is based on the theatrical release, not the DVD version) I am not generally a fan of romantic comedies; I drove 400 miles to New Bedford, MA, to watch this one purely to see Jason Isaacs, and I was not disappointed! The movie apparently went through a change of cast (Isaacs replaced another actor at the very last possible minute), it went through at least one change of ending, and I suspect the script was still being tinkered with the night before I saw it, all of which goes some way to explaining its somewhat uneven pacing and lurching storyline. The script was reportedly written on spec, at least in part to promote the town of New Bedford, last the location for a movie when Gregory Peck appeared in "Moby Dick", and the screenwriters have ladled on the atmosphere with a vengeance.
The basic storyline, as it finally comes down to us, has the *gorgeous* Sofia Milos, absolutely radiant here, playing Celia Amonte, the subdued widow of a drowned Portuguese...

Suspend disbelief and just enjoy it
Yeah, yeah, it's a highly unlikely situation, and it's not believable in lots of parts. But still. Just get over it and sit back to enjoy this lovely and entertaining movie. Set in New Bedford, a Portuguese fishing town, it tells the story of a drop deal gorgeous widow (Sofia Milos) who spurns all potential suitors, is living adjacent (duplex) to her mother-in-law (the mama from Real Women Have Curves), and is raising her teenage daughter very strictly. The only place she releases the soul of her passion is in restaurants where she sings fado music, passionate Portuguese ballads of intense drama.
Of course the daughter is no dummy and finds ways to sneak off to casinos; for inexplicable reasons, she yearns to be a card shark. She finds a guy who just might be willing to teach her a thing or two. Happens the guy also has heard Mama singing her fado gig and has fallen ace over deuces for her.
Some great scenes, some great music, some poignant scenes, lots of touching humor. A...

Sofia Milos Shines in Otherwise Bland Romance.
In the Portuguese community in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Celia Amonte (Sofia Milos) lost her fisherman husband to the sea. Seven years later, Celia works in a factory by day, sings passionate ballads by night, and still grieves for her husband. One evening, a professional gambler named Charlie Beck (Jason Isaacs) hears Celia sing and falls head over heels for her on the spot. But Celia is married to widowhood and distrustful of gamblers. Celia's brash teenaged daughter, Vicki (Emmy Rossum), proposes to help Charlie hide his lifestyle and woo her mother in exchange for lessons in card-counting.

"Passionada" was directed by Dan Ireland and written by Jim and Steve Jermanok. Setting this romance in Portuguese community of New Bedford gives the film a nice texture and sense of place. The cast is impressive. But somehow the story is just flat and not quite credible. Sofia Milos gives a charismatic and emotionally astute performance. She commands the audience's attention in...

Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden

A National Geographic Docudrama, Not A True Feature Film: Well Done For What It Is
After watching "Seal Team Six," I was a bit surprised to see the diversity in reactions to this well-intentioned teleplay. I didn't really expect to see glowing five star reviews, but nor did I anticipate the vitriol with which others would respond to this piece. Maybe it helps to know what you're getting into when approaching the DVD/Blu-ray release of "Seal Team Six." This is NOT the eagerly anticipated and critically lauded (and soon to be Oscar winning) film "Zero Dark Thirty" by Kathryn Bigelow. (Even that film, though, has its detractors despite unanimous critical acclaim). Instead, this straightforward docudrama was produced and aired by the National Geographic Channel. In no way does this constitute a definitive treatment of a difficult subject. It just boils down the main events of a rigorous manhunt into a earnest summary. It is a surface presentation of complicated events and judged on those terms, it works just fine.

This little film is loaded with TV...

Stand up and cheer flick even though outcome known
By Jim Clark, publisher, Lee County Courier, Tupelo, Mississippi

White House officials will not "confirm or deny" if Seal Team Six got it right or not.
There are a couple things we know they got wrong. None of the compound's children wandered outside as the Black Hawk's arrived on the scene like they did in the movie. Also Osama Bin Laden was shot in the head when he ducked his head out the doorway to see what was going on.
I haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty, a film also about this successful Seal mission. But I suspect it's the better of the two knowing the actors involved and what some critics, I respect, have said.
But Seal Team Six is worth a watch while waiting for the other to arrive on DVD.
There's little doubt that this mission was what every Navy Seal has been trained for and more than willing to participate in.
The film mixes actors with real characters via news footage in a documentary style thriller. The CIA think they have located...

Good, but would have been better without the political undertones
Not a bad movie overall if you can get past the propaganda. I felt that the overuse of the President (who from all accounts resisted the raid) made me wonder how much of this movie was documentary and how much was histrionics. Also, the display of the photo of the President, staffers and Mrs. Clinton as if they were watching events unfold in real time, while the CIA has admitted that there was no live video footage of the raid, lost the movie one star.

Barney: Imagination Island

Good Show, But Not a Full Length Movie
"Imagination Island" is one of the better Barney outings, and I can happily recommend it. However, the new packaging and promotion is extremely misleading when it claims to be a "full-length movie." It's not, and it never has been. "Imagination Island" runs only 45 minutes, and was originally a primetime TV special on NBC. It has been available on DVD since 1999.

The production values are quite good, but are the same as other Barney videos of this vintage and are not of "feature film" quality. All of which is to say that kids will enjoy the show, as long as neither they (nor their parents) are expecting this to be either a new production or a "full-length movie." And shame on HIT Entertainment for this deceitful repackaging.

A Barney Classic
As the professor would say... "enchanting"... my two year old loves it- as did my -now ten year old son when he was two...

Great for kids
I loved Barney growing up--especially this episode--and so I decided to buy Imagination Island for my two-year-old niece. She absolutely loves it as well, and has even learned a new word: imagine. Great product that can teach kids how to share and be kind to others without expecting anything in return.

A Dangerous Place

Highly Recommended
Incredibly entertaining, "A Dangerous Place" is full of action and suspense. I would highly recommend as it is one of those movies I could watch over and over again on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I originally saw this film at the Garden State Film Festival and was very impressed. The film premiered on a Saturday night and was one of the featured films at the festival. The two hours flew by and it did not disappoint.

Kristen Daulten, from the "Departed", has always been one of my favorite actresses and has a lead role in "A Dangerous Place". This movie really makes you think about life in so many different ways. There are several ongoing plots throughout the film and they all tie in beautifully at the end. While the story is based on the outbreak of a deadly virus spreading throughout the Country, the movie also chronicles a family dealing with the loss of a loved one from 9/11. The special effects and cinematography are really well done. This film is not just an action packed...

AN INDIE GEM!
"A Dangerous Place" is one of those rare movies that presents a scenario so realistic that it is scary. From beginning to it's thrilling conclusion, it has you on the edge of your seat with excitement! Kevin Interdonato (Ross) and Kristen Dalton (Claire) play so well off of each other that I forgot that I was watching actors and rather felt like I was watching a true sociopath and a woman determined to stop the horror no matter what it costs!

One of the finest indie releases this entire year, totally unpredictable film, in a really good way
As "ADP" isn't the average predictable, cliche thriller, it was definitely one of those few films that left you at the edge your seat, yet you really feel for, root for "Clairice" cause she such an underdog against a bunch a legion of secret terrorist minons, she has no one to trust but herself and her own gut instanct. What the film really also displays is the realism to it, like there aren't any "Hollywood" cliche type of scenes that the general audience has grown a custom to expect, the action sequences to "ADP" are simply put realistic. This film is not without a great deal of dramatic sequences that have very real, human, emotional layers to it. What makes this film so powerful tho, and I think it really strikes a chord with anyone that views it, the scary part is this can actually really happen, especially the way things are in this day and age.

What I also really enjoyed about this movie, is that, its not at all a bite off of any other conspiracy theory/ terrorist...

A Walk On The Moon

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy
This is one movie that is misnamed. Ask anybody if they've seen it and they always say, Oh yeah, you mean the one with The Blouse Man. I learned from a friend of the woman who wrote the original that THAT was the original name. They should have kept it. But otherwise, I can't think of a negative thing to say about this movie. It's a coming-of-age (the daughter, played by Anna Paquin) story; it's a tale of a marriage turning boring and of temptation knocking at the door (The Blouse Man himself, SO well played by Viggo Mortensen; it's the exploration of the responsibilities that vie with the passions of the mom who sacrificed her youth and dreams to unplanned pregnancy and early marriage (so perfectly played by the lovely Diane Lane); the rage of the mostly clueless but loving and dutiful husband (Liev Schreiber), and the incomparable Tovah Feldshuh as the wise and sassy mother-in-law who literally and figuratively smacks sense into everyone's heads. The whole drama plays out during...

One of My Favorites!
My husband and I own this movie and think it's fabulous on every level. We've watched it many times since it was first released. Diane Lane and Liev Schrieber are both marvelous actors and are able to convey so much about their emotions with small moments. Tovah Feldshuh, as the wise mother-in-law, is perfect. The changing times are believably portrayed in this story about a couple who married young in a different time and now find their world changing. (I was 18 at the time of the moon landing and Woodstock so witnessed the era firsthand.) One of the things that is so good about this movie is that all the characters are good, well-intentioned people - there is no "bad" guy here, even the gorgeous "blouse man," played by Viggo Mortensen, is a decent guy. I love it that both Pearl and Marty, after they realize some new things about each other, are willing to try and find their way back to each other in this new world. The final scene of them dancing on the porch couldn't be...

An ode to family values
Such high-quality movies like A Walk On The Moon rarely get released . It's a film about the stormy turns a family's daily life takes when wife Pearl ( Lane ) meets a charming blouse man ( Mortensen ) . Although it's clear that she does love her husband ( Schreiber ) , she fails to remain faithfull to him . At the same time her daughter ( Anna Paquin ) is slowly becoming a woman . Her first flirt with a boy takes place and the girl , full of doubts and questions tries to come in terms with her puberty . The film's biggest strength is it's cast . Lane gives a quiet , carefull perfomance as the young wife while Mortensen displays once more his poisonous charms . The heart of the film though is Liev Schreiber who gives to his character the human sensitivity he needs to seem believable . He's one of these gifted , underrated actors ( see also Don Cheadle , Ben Chaplin ) who we would never like to see leading an expensive , supernatural blockbuster movie . What makes A Walk On The Moon so...

Great movie with an interesting twist
This movie had two actors that I've enjoyed watching over the years but never knew they were in a movie together - Alyssa Milano and Justin Theroux. Interesting twist at the end. While predictable at times, it was still a very enjoyable movie and one I would recommend.

Good Movie
This is a action movie with a twist you would not of expected. Alyssa Milano does a excellent job acting in this movie.

Flight 93

a completely different flight
This fine A&E reenactment of one slice of the confusing events of September 11, 2001 succeeds in showing the combination of ad hoc citizen response and highly professional management that greeted the high-speed unfolding of those incomprehensible events.

The grippingly eerie music of the soundtrack frames the portraits of normalcy that open the film. Early on, we are shown the names of many of Flight 93's passengers when the camera focuses on the processing of their boarding passes by a Newark flight agent. From then on, we see them as real people who find themselves the protagonists of a seemingly unreal attack.

When it becomes clear that Flight 93 is 'obviously not planning on landing', the passengers - with the encouragement or acquiescence of grieving family on the ground - do what they have to do to 'regain control of the plane'.

Flight 93 suggests the possibility that orders were given - or would soon have been given - to take the flight down as...

AN INTENSE, EMOTIONALLY-CHARGED RE-EENACTMENT!
"Flight 93" is a riveting, powerful television film that recreates the events of that tragic September morning, as forty brave passengers banned together to re-take their hijacked plane from terrorists who are hell-bent on crashing it into either the White House or the Capitol Building. Outstanding performances, breathtaking visual effects, and exceptional storytelling fuel the film's powerful presentation of the price that was paid on 9/11. I highly recommend it!

Movie/DVD Grade: A

A Stirring Tribute
On a bright September morning in 2001, four commercial airliners were hijacked by Arab terrorists. Three of them were deliberately crashed into buildings; two into the World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon. The fourth airliner, United Airlines flight 93, was also scheduled to be flown into a building, possibly the White House or the Capitol building, but the heroic passengers aboard this flight fought back against the terrorists. Despite knowing that they were all going to die, these brave people banded together and managed to thwart the efforts of the terrorists.

The movie is shown through the eyes of the passengers of flight 93. Their flight begins normally, but once airborne, four Arab terrorists, who claim to have a bomb, succeed in breaking into the cockpit and taking control of the aircraft. The plane, originally bound for San Francisco, is turned around and is now heading east. The terrorists, armed whitn box cutters, have already killed one of the...

About Adam

Surprisingly refreshing and witty.
I managed to catch this one on the independant film channel, and I'm glad I did.
We all know romantic comedies are a dime a dozen, and though I admit to being a sucker for some, I always know the plots are predictable. Some I just watch because of who's in them, and hope that they'll be different. I lose on that score, often.
Well, this one was different. Sure, there's a love story (is there?), but there are a lot of side stories going on here.
Adam is introduced to us in a typical sort of fashion, like many love stories, and begins romancing Kate Hudson, and it seems like your regular fare, right? Sure, they are attractive, charming, but what's so special about this movie?
Well, THEN he meets the family, and that's when things get.....interesting. Told from three sisters' perspectives, it was a refreshing way to show how this Adam is seen by each person, and to see what was happening in each scene, as some are repeated, BUT from a different POV, which makes them...

Sad and depressing. All about cheating
Kate is great in this movie but the movie itself is completely dysfunctional. I so so dissappointed. It was a complete waste of money. The guy sleeps with pretty much everyone in the family and no one tells her and she ends up marrying him.

Makes you second guess and hate yourself! :)
This movie is hilarious in so many shapes and forms! You can't help but love Adam, even though you know that you should hate him and want horrible consequences for his actions! And then you're forced to think about what sister you're most like and how you'd react if Adam seduced you. You like to think that you'd be a nice, moral woman who knew not to get involved with such a conniving, creepy, sinister man, but you know that deep down, you'd jump in the sack with him immediately! Eeek, heartwrenching self-discovery! *grin*

Protector

MATT'S THE MAN
Matt McColm is a former stuntman who has done a few films including this above-average low budget thriller. McColm plays a bodyguard for hire, aided by his nerdish accountant, the ever ubiquitous Clint Howard. Along the way he encounters his lovely ex-girlfriend played by Annabell Schofield, and the spider lady Morgan Brittany, who plays the evil assistant to the even more evil Ron Perlman. Perlman plays the villain with a casual offhandedness that would later aid him greatly in the campy HELLBOY.

In this film, McColm must stop Perlman from his devious plot: he manufactures a nasty virus, and then to make money, he makes the antedote. Cool way to make millions, huh? Things go pretty bad when McColm foolishly shakes Perlman's hand and gets the virus and has only 48 hours to stop Perlman.

Cheesy in some ways, but McColm has a strong, slightly sardonic delivery and the action scenes are pretty effective.

Not bad for a cheepo.

Good action for a low-budget feature
This film is pretty darn good for being a low-budget feature. (under $1mil). The action is quite good and the performances are above average for the usual lower budget films. I would recommend it for all action lovers. It is fast-paced with some humor.

Schlock
Just a cheap knockoff z grade cable thriller you watch if you're an insomniac hoping you'll be bored by the 2nd act so you could catch some zzzzz. Don't bother.

Carolina

This movie has a little bit of everything
Based on quality this movie should have been released in the theater. However, because it is a more "quiet film," the studio was probably worried that it would cost them more to release it in the theater than they would make by just releasing it on DVD. Shirley McClaine and Julia Styles are well known actors, but there have been many romance movies recently of this type, so the studio probably figured these actors alone might not have enough pull to draw in a big crowd. I hope the audience out there proves them wrong because this is a good movie. Regardless of how it might or might not have done in the theater, it is a great renter. Although it is like every other romantic comedy released in the last few years in that one friend is secretly (or not so secretly) lusting after the other, the acting and writing distinguish it from the rest. As Randy Quaid says in the behind the scenes documentary (special features bonus), the movie is "about real people."

Julia Style's...

A jewel...
I didn't see any reviews or previews for this movie at all. Surprising because it was pretty good. Julia Stiles and Shirley MacLaine work well together as grandmother and granddaughter. It's a touching tale of one dysfunctional family's life. It has it's fun (and touching) moments and I would watch it again.

Could not have been played by a better person...
First off, I would like to say that according to imdb.com, it is said that Kathy Bates was to play the part of the Grandmother in this film...thank god they chose Shirley McLaine for this part, nothing against Ms. Bates and her talents, but after watching this movie, I could not see anyone else playing this part but Ms. MacLaine....

With that said, I have to say that this film is both funny and touching at the same time. It is a movie about two things, finding the right person, and it is about what a family is all about...we all have those family dinners that you want to get up and leave right away as soon as someone opens their mouth...and this is the way that Carolina feels as she totes her date around, trying to impress the family. What she finds later is that no matter who your family is, or where they come from, you love them just the same....a good family picture...should not be missed!!

Paul McCartney: The Music and Animation Collection

Genius...No. Enjoyable...Yes.
This DVD is a mixed bag, containing three different cartoons created over the last 20 years. To thoroughly vet the offerings, I viewed this disc with my three expert cartoon critics, ages 9, 7 and 6.

I've been anticipating "Tropical Island Hum" for a few years now since the project was previewed during the "Flaming Pie" sessions. And the problem with expectations is they are often dashed. The cartoon is virtually plotless and merely a showcase for the eponymous song, a tune that is subpar by McCartney standards. The kids found it pretty dull too. A giggle here and there, but not much beyond that. Sadly, the closing credits were almost as long as the cartoon (and more enjoyable).

"Tuesday", on the other hand, is a wondrous cartoon full of magic, delight and hosts a splendid soundtrack. And the kids enjoyed it very much too. This enchanting story about the nocturnal travels of lillypad flying frogs is beautifully drawn and almost worth the price of the...

Still magical after all these years...
This DVD collects three short films directed by Geoff Dunbar based on ideas/music/songs by Sir Paul McCartney: "Tropic Island Hum," from 1997; "Tuesday," from 2000; and finally "Rupert and the Frog Song," from 1985.

"Rupert and the Frog Song" is the real gem on this collection. It follows legendary comic character Rupert the Bear as he explores the country one night and finds a special gathering of frogs. I bought the DVD because of this piece; it was such a huge favorite of mine as a child I just had to revisit it and see if it still held the same magic it did as a child. I have to say, it still holds up very well. The song in it, "We All Stand Together" is a great song written by Paul and arranged by the Beatle's producer George Martin.

"Tropic Island Hum" is a fun little cartoon that Paul and his late wife Linda produced. Paul and Linda do nearly all the voices. It has a very good song at its core but doesn't quite capture the magic of Rupert. Interestingly,...

Watch Out Disney!
You can see the Disney influence from the outset in the way McCartney introduces the videos just as Walt used to do.

There are three short animated features. Tropic Island Hum is the first. It is a story about an island where animals find sanctuary from hunters and other forms of abuse. It is light, whimsical, and fun. Some of the artwork is quite astoundingly beautiful: look at the sunsets. This is a lovely tribute to Linda McCartney who was a great animal protection advocate.

Second up is Tuesday which is about a day when frogs go on an extraordinary adventure. This is based on an award winning book of the same name by David Wiesner. The animation includes voice work by Dustin Hoffman. This is the best of the three. It is surreal, funny, and completely charming. The music is absolutely stunning and I hope it will be released. This one is just plain exquisite.

The third video is Rupert And the Frog Song featuring the song We All Stand Togther and voice work by June...

I'm a 11-year old and just last week, my little brother got the new Thomas and Friends DVD "Thomas and the Jet Engine." I was glad that they got Alec Baldwin back, who narrated three stories, but in the next three, the new narrator Michael Brandon narrates. Both did a excellent job. The DVD includes six new stories, a new sing-along song, and new games and activities. Some of the new games are called Memory Madness, Counting corner, and What came first? My brother watched it over and over and over and over, which i was surprised by, like he was addicted to it. Anyways, about the stories. . . . .

Misleading Title
When you read the title of this dvd you don't except it will have Halloween stories in it. That is just what it contained and I would prefer if the dvd producers would have given it a title to suggest that those types of episodes are on it so that those wanting to avoid those kind of stories would do so easily. If you don't want Halloween type of episodes of Thomas, then don't buy this dvd.

WHAT??!!
Is everybody smoking junk? 5 STARS? This movie was an embarassment to the African-American race. The actors(rappers)in this movie have such a stronghold on today's youth...if your gonna make a movie, why not make a movie about something positive? You could argue that the end of the movie made a statement in that Beans glory was shortlived and there is no future in that life, was that the message? Why make a movie that has been made so many times already? This story has been told 100 times over. Lets do something different and make a movie with substance that we can be proud of..as a young African-American male, I was truly embarassed watching this movie. Is this all we are capable of? One day I hope we wake up and understand...
NOW...for the review
This was a travesty...I gave it one star because i could not let me submit this with none. The acting was terrible to say the least. I give them credit for trying...but what this seemed like to me was a prosperous record...

Slavery For Today's Youth
This is a terrible movie that I gave 1 star because I couldn't give any fewer. It features the usual idols given primarily to the black youth of today, hip hoppers playing gangstas who have no respect for anything or anyone other than money. It is another one of those blaxploitation specials in which there is literally no figure of any redeeming value. This explains the almost endless series of beatings, shootings, and overall ignorance portrayed in sequence, and served up as some sort of story. It's only entertainment they say, but they are typecast without even knowing it, foolishly dying to portray a fantasy image...psychologically bound as tight as any slave was ever shackeled.

State Property
First of all I find fault with the opening credits where it states that this movie is inspired by actual events. Whatever, this movie is inspired by the unimaginative imaginations of a few guys who watched Scarface one two many times and decided they wanted to live out their fantasies through film. The writing is horrible. The acting is horrible. Beanie Sigel and the other characters in his little mob are underdeveloped to the point where they all seam to be the same person. Beanie Sigel, as the main character, has absolutely no motivation for going on a murderous rampage in order to build his drug empire other than the fact that he was bored one day at a strip club. Nothing happens in this movie that makes it stand out from the others in this genre. It's exactly the same story only the names of the characters have changed. Young thug sells drugs, young thug wants more money, young thug kills many to get money, young thug expands territory gets power. You know the rest. Don't waste...

Chutney Popcorn

Startlingly Sensitive and Funny
For unknown reasons, I could hear in my head the vindictive (and hopefully fictional!) voice of a fundamentalist preacher condemning the "unnatural acts of sinful love" of this film's main characters.

In actuality, this is a movie about the true meanings in contemporary America of "love," "family," and "culture," and it grapples admirably with the changing social and personal-relationship patterns brought about by modern notions of democracy and freedom. Lisa and Reena are truly in love, and their families truly love them as well; but how are all these individuals to deal with Reena's choice to carry to term the baby she is producing through artificial insemination (using her brother-in-law's sperm)? Reena's sister has decided that she no longer WANTS a baby (she herself, biologically, cannot provide the egg for the child-to-be); however, Reena has decided SHE wants the baby, while Reena's female lover doesn't wish to become part of a...

Just that much more spice...
In the stereotypical Indian mother who refuses to accept the fact that her daughter is a lesbian and continues to refer to her daughter's lover (Jill Hennessey delivering an excellent performance!) as her 'college roommate,' "Chutney Popcorn" finds a touch of humor, stark reality and soul. Reena (Nisha Ganatra directing herself) is a photographer with a penchant for temporary mehndi tattoos, lives with Lisa whom she loves dearly, has a newly wed sister, and is plunged into a situation she quickly loses control over.

What is particularly brilliant about this film is the evolution of characters as the movie progresses, exquisitely offset by the humdrum of life, given how the developing plot is always inadvertently eavesdropped on by the neighborhood paan-seller. The film deals with some serious issues without ever becoming a discourse on values and morals; "Chutney Popcorn" never looses touch of the obvious reality and the subtle innate humor of the situation; a truly...

Chutney Popcorn is simply a delight!
Nisha Ganatra's new film, "Chutney Popcorn," is a delightful mix of culture clashes, sibling rivalry, and good, old-fashioned dyke drama played out in modern day New York. Multi-talented Ganatra (writer, producer and director) stars as "Reena," very much the black sheep of the family, not only due to her vocation (she's a photographer), but also because of her lesbianism. Her newlywed sibling, Sarita, played by Sakina Jeffrey), finds out she is infertile and that's when the games begin!

Entangled in the fertility games is Reena's commitment-phobic girlfriend, Lisa (Crossing Jordan's Jill Hennessy), Sarita's husband, Mitch, and the girls' mother, an ever-meddlesome, traditional Indian woman. Momma is horrified when Reena decides to step up to the plate and offer herself as a surrogate for Mitch's sperm, Lisa feels the commitment rope tightening around her throat at the announcement, and Sarita begins to have second doubts about the baby.

The ensuing tale is a delight as Reena and...

Scream

Blu-ray is NOT the Unrated Director's Cut
Please note: I'm rating the release, not the movie (which is a favorite of mine).

Save your money and wait for a complete, uncensored release, preferably with some new bonus material.

***SPOILER WARNING***

I broke down and picked this up because Amazon had it on sale for $6. Though not perfect, the picture quality is good/very good. The sound, on the other hand, is fantastic - one of the best DTS-MA tracks I've heard on blu-ray. However, despite all the audio and visual goodness on display, the admittedly small edits to achieve the "R" rating are annoying. The tone of the film changes subtly as a result.

The slow-mo zoom at the end of the opening scene is far more effective than when sped up. A snipped second here and there in a number of other death scenes make them seem cartoonish and sanitized. Two characters appear to repeatedly stab each other with little consequence.

If Scream were released today, it would surely receive an...

"Do You Want to Play Psycho Killer?"
The town of Woodsboro is being haunted by a series of brutal murders. But the focus seems to be Sidney Prescott (Never Campbell). But this isn't your normal serial killer. Instead, the killer has been influenced by the horror movies he or she has watched over the years. Disguised with a Ghostface mask, the killer calls and daunts the victim before arriving to slice and dice.

While most of the high school takes it as a joke, Sidney is taking it seriously. But who around her might be the killer. Maybe it's reporter Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox) looking for her next story. What about film geek Randy (Jamie Kennedy). Boyfriend Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) is a suspect, so that makes him innocent, right? Then again, any of these people might become the next victim. Will knowing the rules of the horror genre help them make it out alive?

Okay, so this is so NOT my normal genre of film. And yes, it definitely earns its R rating with brutal violence and horrid...

Yes....I think it's worth 5 stars
I'm sure in this day and age it's appropriate to give "Scream" less than 5 stars. Plenty of folks will say how "unoriginal" the movie is, or how it's just a rip-off of a bunch of 80's flicks......and I say Bull***t.

"Scream" jump started the horror movie genre in the 1990's. Without "Scream" we woudn't have flicks like "I Know Whay You Did Last Summer" or "Urban Legend". Without "Scream" we might not have "Inside" or "Martyrs". Sure "Scream" ushered in the 90's version of slasher flickes, but it also ushered in an era of self referential horror films. Wes Craven was able to poke fun of the genre he helped create....and the "Scream" audience was in on the joke.

So many horror films since "Scream" have come to rely on the horror converntions set forth in "Scream" that it actually feels original.

"Scream" is meant to be fun, the cast, and the soundtrack both indicate that this is a fun film, not to be taken too seriously. If you've seen "Terror Train" or...

Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids

too scary
The antagonist in this movie is a very scary looking ghost-white spider with a big human-like face, a huge chin and sharp white teeth contrasting against a blood red mouth. He made me raise my eyebrows just before sending my three year old screaming and running from the TV. He shows up in the background in the initial wedding scene, when Miss Spider is getting married, muttering something about why isn't she with him; odd content for a young audience. Then he shows up mouth wide open ready to gobble one of Miss Spider's eggs that was dropped from a branch on the way to the egg sack. The egg does get rescued by some flying bug in the knick of time. We just stopped watching the movie after this point. We won't be watching it again until I know which scenes to skip a priori.

Spiderific!!
We've been playing this DVD for my daughter since she was about 8 months old and she enjoys the colors!!

They're just so vivid that it caught her attention early on and she hasn't let go. Now, at 16 months, she still enjoys watching it while she eats on her high chair and it's the only way to keep her still for a while.

We bought this DVD with a package containing Stellaluna at Costco, and a freebie for the High Five musical group, but nothing has caught my daughter's attention more than this DVD. Growing up with the Disney movies myself, I tried to get her into those movies but they're simply boring for her (of course, she's too little ;-)

Of course, I've enjoyed it, too :-) and always play it for visitors, children and adults, and they always get hooked.

My wife is always laughing at us because my little one and I just get into the movie and don't pay attention to anything else, that's how good it is!!

Two thumbs up!

Adorable!!!!
My daughter Lily loves Miss Spider. I rented this for her and she has watched it every day. I"m going to buy it for our vacation. The movie has all the bright colors like the book and the voice of Brooke Shields as Miss Spider. It is not loud and it is very soft and well done. The DVD has extras that are well worth the money. David Kirk reads the book and there are also more stories. Miss Spider also talks about all her kids and their names and personalities. You can't miss with this purchase and get the book too.

Outside Providence

Try it, You'll Like it!
Summary: Pothead Dunph gets into a little trouble and is spared jail time when his father pulls some strings to get him sent to a prep school instead of jail. He ends up leaving more than just his old friends behind when he goes.

My Opinion: I was very surprised with this movie. It is pushed very strongly as a comedy. Probably because the Farrelly Brothers are famous for those. Although it has funny parts, I don't consider it a comedy. It is more of a coming of age film. It takes place in the 1970s and has a killer soundtrack. If I had not been so pleasantly surprised I would have given this movie 4 stars but it's nice to be surprised.

DVD Quality: Widescreen anamorphic format. How can they make anything but?

What You Should Do: See it. If you don't buy every DVD under the sun like some of us then rent it. There is quite a lot of drug use in the film but it does have a point. It may be too subtle of a point for some to grasp though. If you liked "Detroit Rock City",...

A Delightful Suprise
From the minds behind "Dumb and Dumber" and "Theres Something About Mary" comes another raunchy landmark comedy, but one with heart.

Seemingly repetitive, a teenage boy is sent to a prep school after a car accident involving a parked police car, several friends, and unspecified amounts of narcotics. Throughout his journey he encounters friends, foes, and of course, love.

The same coming of age tale every weekly movie aims for, however superior to most thanks to several key factors.

Alec Baldwin, who was perhaps cast merely to attach a well known name to the movie, pulls off a surprisingly tricky role as a rock solid father who is confused and disappointed with his life. One of the movies most effective scenes is a short one, involving this star-stunned actor teaching his son how to knot a tie.

The script is not only amusing, but it also provides a lot of emotional depth to the story through simple and idealistic lines. Written with cunning craft...

Underneath the movie's pot jokes lies a sweet thoughtfulness
In 1974, pot-smoking teenager Tim Dunphy (Dunph, to his friends) is sent to a superior prep school after getting in trouble with the law for a reefer-induced mishap. There, he tangles with strict administrators, suffers the classrooms of exacting instructors, and hangs out with fellow pothead students. He also encounters Jane Weston, hands down the coolest chick in school and from an upper class family. Jane is beautiful but studious; she's trying to get accepted to Brown University. Dunph is just trying to get by without accruing any more punishment for violation of school policies. Regarding Jane, his friend advises Dunph: "Forget it." Yet, somehow, Dunph and Jane get together. It's not a match made in heaven, but hey, Dunph will take it...

Supposedly based on Peter Farrelly's school experiences at Kent, Outside Providence is a very good coming-of-age movie. It was touted as a comedy but, really, while it has its share of laugh-out-loud funnies, its dramatic undercurrent...

Frontier Justice

Frontier Justice, 1936 film

Extract

Jason Bateman is BRILLIANT!
OK, EXTRACT does not have a slap stick type of humor. I get that. Also, EXTRACT is not as memorable as OFFICE SPACE. Understood. But one thing is sure, EXTRACT is still one of the best all-around movies I've seen this year. JASON BATEMAN is one of the funniest actors around these days. His subtle nuances are what makes him so funny. From TEEN WOLF TOO & HOGAN FAMILY to ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT & JUNO, he is a brilliant actor that gets laughs without ever changing his restrained sense of humor.

The movie itself is about a young, moderately successful factory owner. The factory produces, of course, food extract. The story unfolds and plans backfire, thanks mostly impart to his best friend played by BEN AFFLECK. The role for AFFLECK is a nice return for him back to his roots of doing less than award-winning blockbuster films. With KRISTEN WIIG in a somewhat toned down role and MILA KUNIS as a bit of a vixen, the supporting cast is really well-rounded.

EXTRACT is an...

A difficult month in the life of a nice guy...
"Extract, directed by Mike Judge (King of the Hill), is about Joel (Jason Bateman) who runs an extract factory. He has his regular ups and downs just like anyone, but when one of his workers loses his testicle in a freak accident things start to go from bad to worse. (Spoiler alert for those who have yet to see the film) The next thing that happens to him is a con-woman named Cindy (Mila Kunis) begins work for him. Cindy convinces the testicleless employee to file a lawsuit against the company. Also, his wife hasn't wanted to have sex with him for months, and he takes some bad advice from his friend, Dean (Ben Affleck), and hires a pool guy to seduce his wife so that he can guiltlessly have an affair with Cindy, and before he knows it the pool guy is coming over everyday and has fallen in love with his wife. Then the employees decide that they should get a piece of the pie of his company, since he is thinking of selling it to a prospective buyer, and decide to go on strike...

Moments of fun, but I wanted to love it.... and didn't
I've been waiting or this movie. Loved Office Space, even really enjoyed Idiocracy. I heard some mixed reviews which tempered my expectations, but even so, this was a disappointing and very uneven movie.

Jason Bateman plays his straight-laced, deadpan comedy to the hilt, much as he did in Arrested Development. He is Joel, the owner of a factory employing a real assortment of underachieving, funny characters. With an offer from General Mills to buy the plant and make him rich, Joel looks forward to early retirement. On the home front, he is a sexually frustrated husband with an unreceptive wife and an unrelentingly dull neighbor.

With moments of genius, the movie was also dragged down by some poor realization of comedic potential. Kristin Wiig, a funny and versatile comedienne, is wasted as the housewife, and although she certainly has enough scenes, the writing doesn't allow her to perform.

The various subplots didn't mesh as well as I expected...

Undiscovered

Please enter a title for your review
The movie lost me at the start with one of the guys enthusiastically proclaiming a totally plain looking girl dressed like a homeless person as "gorgeous", and then followed it up with "the prettiest girl I've ever seen", as if "prettiness" is really something cocky late teen/early 20s guys gush over. Around the 15 minute point it finds it's groove though.
In terms of visual atmosphere alone this film is an anomoly in the teen romance genre, and it also has a way of capturing casual moments by having participants in a group conversation expressing themselves with body language and facial expressions when others are speaking which creates a great sense of authenticity that I don't think I've seen since Crazy/Beautiful, which is still for my money the most poignantly realistic teen movie ever made. There's a minimal use of one-shots during conversations, and when they are used the transitions from one person to another aren't timed directly with when they start and stop speaking,...

not very impressed
I wasn't expected much when I went to see this movie, and so I wasn't too disappointed. The acting is all right, but there really isn't any story and it's generally neither enjoyable nor believable. The entire movie seems to be about how good looking Steven Strait is and what a great musician he is, and while he is relatively good looking and can sing, there isn't enough there to make an entire movie out of.

ROCK STAR 2....?
Absolutely boring, and with an enerving camera style, this is one of the worst movies i've ever seen. The plot and characters are absolutely stupid and predictable, and even worst, they don't evolved a little bit in all the entire movie.

The best part is the skateboard dog and the goods looks of Steven Strait, but if you really wanna enjoy him, i better recommend you THE COVENANT. Is the typical horror flick, but at least, is not so presumptuos that this one.

Jackson Five: The Completed Animated Series BD/Combo [Blu-ray]

Psychedelic Seventies Silliness: This Cartoon Boasts Great Nostalgia And Music, But May Not Translate To Modern Kids
The nostalgia factor can be a show's best friend or its worst enemy. I can easily imagine that the viewers who got caught up in the animated adventures of the Jackson Five during the short lived show from 1971 "Jackson 5ive" will be thrilled to revisit their old friends. However, let's face it, the show aired for 23 episodes over forty years ago. That means that this DVD release will likely be viewed through very modern eyes both by those who have never heard of it and by those who might not even be familiar with the Jackson Five. As I sat down to this flight of fancy, I immediately recognized the trademark psychedelic look of the time, the cheesy dialogue, and the infectious pop soundtrack. In short, it was pretty much exactly what I expected. That doesn't necessarily mean that it was good or bad in my estimation. It simply means that what you get out of "Jackson 5ive" is directly proportional to your expectations going in. And in truth, I'm not sure modern kids will be able...

This is a "groovy" blast into the past with Tito, Marlon, Jermaine, Jackie and, of course, Michael Jackson!
There really is nothing like a blast from the past and Classic Media has done it in style. I'm from the generation who actually looked forward to watching the Jackson 5ive on Saturday mornings. Mind you, we only had thirteen channels then and if you wanted to watch another one, you had to get up to change it. There was no such thing as a remote and cell phones ... well, that was something you'd see on the futuristic Star Trek series. The Jackson 5ive series was short, but very sweet, running from September 11, 1971 to October 14, 1972. It later resurfaced briefly during the 1980s.

The remastered songs and the film have definitely improved the series, but there's still that old laugh track that gives in that nostalgic, retro feel. I played the series on an old surround sound DVD player and the sound was awesome. Not quite like the old stereo sound, but the series is now ready for yet another generation to enjoy. The packaging is quite appealing, especially the discs which...

Groovy! As great as I remember them from my childhood!
I received this set directly from the publisher, and hoped that it would be as great as it was in my memory of 40 years ago. The Jacksons burned up the music charts when I was a tween and of course Michael owned the charts in the 80s. Every kid I knew watched the Jackson 5 cartoon on TV, and we sang their songs on the school bus.

I'm happy to say that this 2-DVD set is every bit as good as I remember. The colors are bold and the sound crystal clear. It's actually better than when it appeared on TV because of the improved sound and picture capability of today's technology. Add in the bonus of no TV commercials and you've got a perfect trip down memory lane. All 46 of the remastered songs sound great!

Yes, the story lines are sappy, but they were a product of their times and I like them much better than the TV shows full of sexuality and bad language targeted towards our kids today.

This collection will probably appeal most to children of the 70s...

The Inbetweeners

perfect end to the series!
do you know when you watch a film which has came from an established tv series and it is almost certainly a let down? Well the inbetweeners film does not do this. The story follows the 4 main characters on their last 'lads' holiday together where they demonstrate all of the profanities and vulgar ideas in which they are famous for. this film will have you laughing and is a great way to end the series.

Brilliantly and hilariously vulgar
This movie was a step in the right direction from the show in my opinion. As the boys grow older,so does some of the sassy and inappropriate things they do and say. 30 seconds in and I was already laughing loudly. The best part of it all is every single character is played by the same actor/actress, that's sometimes rare in a Tv to movie situation so its definitely worth buying and/or renting. You'll most likely cry from laughing so hard. :)

Just as I had expected and more!
I am a huge Inbetweeners fan and was quite upset that the movie was not shown in my area when it was released this year. To make it worse, my extended family in England was quoting how incredibly funny the movie was. I received this movie for Christmas and enjoyed viewing it on Christmas Day. It was as funny as I had expected it to be! The comedic timing of all of the actors is priceless and I loved every minute of the movie. I would recommend the movie to any fan of the series!

Footsteps

Crack Mystery Thriller
A phobic female mystery writer (Candice Bergen) arrives home late one night to find her dog missing and an intruder in her house. The intruder says he's a fan and met no harm. But then a cop appears, invites himself inside and chases the kid off. But soon the writer begins to suspect the cop may not in fact be a cop, may be a hit man instead, and the plot begins to thicken.

This story is written as a play, so there are few characters, a lot of dialogue and more than a measure of surprises and intrigue. Candice Bergen provides a sterling performance as does Bryan Brown. I'll watch this movie again.

Magnificent Thriller
I love this movie because of its twists and turns, not to mention a terrific cast headed up by the matchless Candice Bergen.

The Very Worst Movie Ever!
I must absolutely agree with the one other reviewer here, so far, who also gave this one star.....this "movie" WAS a TV production, and even in that genre, one of the worst examples I have ever seen. What was evident from the outset was the combination of terribly orchestrated histrionics from the lead "star", Bergen, the nevertheless largely wooden presentation, and the unbelieveably predictable, telegraphed plot line, and presentation. My wife and I turned it off after 10 minutes. Cannot believe Amazon charged $4.32 for this, when Amazon otherwise so often presents real bargins on this site, including the free passes for those of us on Prime.

Down To You

I was forced to see this film when it was in the theaters...
... and I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

Back when this film was first released, I was forced into seeing it with a female family member. I expected the worst. It had Freddie Prinze, Jr. in it. The commercials for it seemed to imply that it was geared towards the teen set. I really wasn't expecting to like this film. Boy, was I surprised!

This film ended up becoming one of my favorite romantic comedies. The story itself, about the evolving of Alfred and Imogen's relationship, was so well written and unpredictable. It wasn't one of those films where you could predict each plot twist twenty minutes before it happened.

The cast is above par for movies of this genre. Stiles and Prinze do a good job in their lead roles. Selma Blair and the actor who played Alfred's "artsy-fartsy" porn actor friend were also entertaining. Film and TV legend Henry Winkler added a lot of gusto to the film in the supporting role of Alfred's Emeril-esque dad as...

Loved It, and I'm a guy!
Now, you could call this a girls type of movie. 'Chick flick' for the lack of a better term. I was draged to go see it with my grilfriend. By the way the studio's know we get draged to see these type of films and cash in on the both of us. Anyhow, this movie was 'real'. When you watch it, you say ya, that's what we went through and that's how we fell in love and that's how we felt and that is how confusing things can get and thouse are the things that happen to people. Really captures love and relationships of 90s.

A movie you'll never forget
"Down To You" is a romantic comedy-drama unlike any other, combining the two kings of romatic comedies Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles. After I saw "10 Things I Hate About You", and got it on DVD, it was at that point I thought Julia Stiles could not get any better. But she did. Julia delivers a bang up performance that will bring you to tears in certain scenes, as near the end she exercizes her remarkable ability to make herself cry. And Freddie Prinze Jr. delivers a performance typical of his other movies that girls find irresistible.

The whole point is, this is another example of a drama being sold as a comedy, because this most certainly is a drama. Sure, some things were funny, but this truly is a drama that you will never forget.

Watch this movie!
